How Is Himalayan Balsam Controlled in the North West?
Himalayan balsam is an annual, so the whole job is stopping it setting seed. Plants are pulled or cut below the lowest node between June and August, before the pods ripen and fire seed several metres. Seed in the soil stays viable for about two years, so a site needs two or three seasons of follow-up. Work near water is timed and licensed to protect the bank.
What Are the Rules on Himalayan Balsam in the North West?
Himalayan balsam is listed in Schedule 9 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, which makes it an offence to plant it or cause it to grow in the wild. It is also a species of special concern under the Invasive Alien Species (Enforcement and Permitting) Order 2019, which bans keeping, selling and releasing it.
